The People’s Project staff and volunteers in Hamilton went out in the early hours on two mornings in September looking for unsheltered homeless people on the streets, in parks and carparks, and along the Waikato River. We found 34 people sleeping rough, 11 outside and 23 in vehicles.
The city-wide outreach is the main event during Connections Week. The aim is to offer immediate help where we can and to engage with those who wish to start the process of finding safe and adequate housing. It also gives us an insight into the size and nature of the unsheltered homeless population in Hamilton.
